Day care services are generally considered to be cost effective

Scotland County Adult Day Services, formerly Senior’s Pride Adult Day Care/Adult Day Health Center, is a privately owned company established in October 1980 by Vicky Cooper Taylor. Mrs. Taylor established the SPADC/ADH Center in response to a growing need for adult day services in the community. in November 2000, the Center was obtained by Vickie Lynn Jones, daughter of Mrs. Taylor, and the center was renamed Scotland County Adult Day Services.

Since 1980, with a great deal of diligence and uphill struggles with financial support, Mrs. Taylor and Ms. Jones have always managed to find channels to keep the center open for the past 29 years. Survival of most adult day care/day health programs relies upon support from the community. Adult day care/day health is a growing and evolving problem.

The idea of adult day care is based upon the philosophy that adults should have the right to determine the type of care they receive, regardless of their age or frailty, and that options should not be closed to them on the basis of limitations or needs.

Adult day care reduces the isolation and prejudices often associated with the frail and impaired adult, and ensures continued relationships with the community. It also enables the individual to maintain his or her role within the family structure and remain at home for as long as possible.

While families are the primary providers of care to frail and impaired adults, they are seldom able to provide all of the needed physical, social, and emotional support. Adult day care shares in providing care for the individual while educating, counseling, and supporting the caregiver. It seeks to create an atmosphere that enhances the value of human life and affirms the dignity and self-worth of an individual. The uniqueness of adult day care stems from its individualized approach and its ability to meet the individual’s need.

Day care services are generally considered to be cost effective when compared with the cost of institutional care, such as skilled nursing facilities or even home health care. More importantly, adult day care enables older adults, persons with physical disabilities, and those with cognitive impairments to maintain their independence. Research has demonstrated that adult day care also reduces the risks and frequency of hospitalization for older adults. Adult day care satisfies two requirements of care: it provides a secure, protected environment, and it is often the least restrictive setting in which care may be delivered.

Scotland County Adult Day Services is committed to providing a structured, comprehensive program with a variety of health, social and related support services in a protective setting. By supporting families and other caregivers in their effort to provide love and care to the adult who needs extra assistance, the center enables participants to live at home in the community for as long as possible.

Our program is open to adults 18 years of age or older who are able to adapt to a group setting and who are in need of daily care and/or supervision.

SCADS serves persons with Alzheimer’s disease, visual and hearing impairments, physical handicaps, mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Persons who have few or inadequate support systems, persons with physical problems that require health monitoring and supervision on a regular basis, and persons whose family and/or caregiver needs respite care are also served.
